actualities
In early cinematic history, the Lumière brothers’ ventured into the world with their newly invented mobile motion picture device. Over the course of a few years, the brothers filmed hundreds of short non-fiction films. These “actualities” consisted of everyday subjects, places, and things, and lasted anywhere from 40-50 seconds. Through the simple process of pointing a camera and highlighting the mundane, the world revealed itself to both the filmmakers and audiences as both miraculous and beautiful. My experience with this film form has been gratifying. These little films have enabled me to slow down and see my surroundings with a new sense of wonder and love. When it comes to actualities, the Lumières did it first (and best). To honor this masterful and artful legacy, I humbly attempt to follow suit.
